It’s always great to get a pleasant surprise when it comes to hearing a new band for the first time.
Boss Lady, the Fat Wreck Chords debut from Los Angeles’ Bad Cop/Bad Cop is that pleasant surprise. It is 10 minutes of pop punk that is fast-paced, tight, catchy, and filled with multi-part harmonies that leaves you wanting more.
This 4-track EP was released on April 1, 2014. The all-girl band was discovered by Fat Wreck Chord’s owner Fat Mike last year at San Francisco’s Bear Pride celebration.
The band consists of guitar/vocals duo Jennie Cotterill and Stacey Dee, as well as bassist Rinh Re and drummer Myra Gallarza.
Until recently, I had never heard of the band but I am glad that they were referred to me. There aren’t many all-girl bands in this mostly male-dominated pop punk world. They are reminiscent of bands such as The Fastbacks, Tilt, Bikini Kill, and Joan Jett while maintaining their own unique identity.
As represented by the songs on Boss Lady, Bad Cop/Bad Cop definitely does not wear their sexuality on their sleeve. With lyrics like “never let a man slow me down” and “the only things i want are” these girls are determined to make you aware that they have things other than boys on their mind.
