Return to RIFTS

Here is a strong bit of randomness for you. Recently, I started playing RIFTS. Again.

First, let me explain what I’m talking about for those of you that don’t know.

RIFTS is a tabletop role-playing game (yes, I am that nerd). It was created by a guy named Kevin Siembieda, who was a co-founder of Palladium Books. The game was originally published in 1990. The game is a science fiction/fantasy type of role-playing game that is set in a post-apocalyptic future.

I started playing this game in the early 1990s when I was in college. I played for a few years and quit playing not because I did not enjoy playing the game anymore but because the availability of other players that were interested in the game died out. Even so, RIFTS has always been my favorite tabletop RPG.

In the past few years, I have played Dungeons & Dragons with a few groups and I’ve played a tabletop Star Wars RPG a time or two but even though I still owned a couple of the RIFTS books, I never found anyone that would be interesting in playing the game.

A few months ago, however, I came across a Facebook group devoted to RIFTS and Palladium so I joined it in the off chance that I would find some people that lived in the area that wanted to play. I found some folks that played online via Dischord, roll20, or some other online gaming platforms but I really wanted to find local folks to play with.
About a month or so ago, I was able to find a group to play with so we met up and the game began. My son (also an avid fan of role-playing games and all that is nerdy) also joined since I had shown him the RIFTS books a couple of times and perked his interest.

So, the group has played three times now and it has been quite a bit of fun. We have a good GM (game master) that really seems to enjoy weaving a story (and messing with us) and also has quite a huge collection of RIFTS publications.

So that’s it. That is all I had to say. If you are interested in enriching your lives and learning more about RIFTS, here are some links for you.
