Top 10 Films of 2017

I’m not going to preface this list with a lot of fanfare. This is a list of my top 10 favorite movies of 2017.

10. Boss Baby
This film was included on the list as my obligatory animated film for this year’s list. It was released in March and was directed by Tom McGrath (previously directed the Madagascar movies and Megamind). It included the voice talents of Alec Baldwin, Tobey Maguire, Steve Buscemi, Miles Bakshi, Jimmy Kimmel, and Lisa Kudrow.

9. Alien: Covenant
This movie was a prequel to the original Alien saga and a prequel to 2012s Prometheus. It was released in May and directed by Ridley Scott. It starred Michael Fassbender (reprising the David role from Prometheus), Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride.

8. Justice League
One of several super-hero films on this list, it was released in November. It was directed by Zack Snyder and included a cast of Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (Flash), Jason Mormoa (Aquaman), and Ray Fisher (Cyborg).

7. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2
This highly anticipated sequel was released in May and directed by James Gunn. Cast included Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, and Kurt Russell.

6. Underworld: Blood Wars
This one was released in January and directed by Anna Foerster. It is the 5th film of the Underworld saga and the follow-up to 2012s Awakening. Kate Beckinsale returns as the vampire Selene.

5. Thor: Ragnorak
Directed by Taika Waititie, Thor Ragnorak was released in November. The cast included Chris Hemworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Mark Ruffalo, Karl Urban, Anthony Hopkins and Tessa Thompson.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Following the adventures of teen super-hero Spider-Man, this one was released in July.
Directed by Jon Watts, the cast included Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Maria Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

3. Wonder Woman
Surpassing many super-hero movies in more ways than one, this one was released in June and directed by Patty Jenkins. The cast included Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, and David Thewlis.

2. Logan
By far the best Wolverine movie of the trilogy, it was released in March. It was directed by James Mangold (previously directed Cop Land, Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, and The Wolverine). The cast included Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, and Dafne Keen.

1. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Up until last week, Logan was #1 on this list. Leave it to Star Wars to come and ruin that movie’s chances for top billing. It was released in December and directed by Rian Johnson. The amazing case included Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Domhall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Benicio del Toro, and Laura Dern. No spoilers here, go see it yourself.

EDITOR’S NOTE: There were a ton of movies that I wanted to see this year and never got around to. I reserve the right to update this list as I see fit once I have gotten around to seeing the other movies that I wanted to see.
