Top 10 Biopics

Happy Wednesday folks!

Today’s list will be about biopics. Biopics of course being biographical films. That is, films based on the lives of real people. Pretty straight forward list. They are listed in chronological order by year of release.

1.  The Elephant Man
This film was released in 1980 and directed by David Lynch. It is the story of a deformed man named Joseph Merrick (played by John Hurt) and the doctor (played by Anthony Hopkins) that befriends him.

2.  The Doors
Released in 1991, this Oliver Stone directed films tells the story of the legendary rock band The Doors, focusing mostly on the life of singer Jim Morrison, played by Val Kilmer. Meg Ryan and Kyle MacLachlan also star in this film.

3.  Hoffa
This one is about the life of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa, played by Jack Nicholson. It was directed by Danny DeVito (who also stars in the film) and was released in 1992.

4.  Malcolm X
This one about the life of the civil rights activist is based on his book The Autobiography of Malcolm X. It was released in 1992 and directed by Spike Lee. Denzel Washington plays the title role.

5.  Backbeat
This Beatles biography focuses on their time in Germany, specifically focusing on Stu Sutcliffe’s time with them. It was directed by Iain Softley and released in 1994. Stephen Dorff plays Sutcliff. Sheryl Lee and Ian Hart are also in the film.

6.  Cobb
Tommy Lee Jones plays an aging Ty Cobb (the baseball player) on a trip with a reporter, played by Robert Wuhl, to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was released in 1994 and directed by Ron Shelton.

7.  Michael Collins
This film is based on the founder of the Irish Republican Army and was directed by Neil Jordan. It was released in 1996 and stars Liam Neeson in the title role as well as Julia Roberts, Alan Rickman (as future Irish President Eamon de Valera) and Aidan Quinn.

8.  Walk the Line
This 2005 released biopic about Johnny Cash and June Carter was directed by James Mangold. Johnny and June are played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. It was based on two autobiographies Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words and Cash: The Autobiography.

9.  Frost/Nixon
This film tells the story of the interviews that were conducted by journalist David Frost, played by Michael Sheen, of former President Richard Nixon, played by Frank Langella. It was directed by Ron Howard and released in 2008.

10.  Snowden
This 2016 film directed by Oliver Stone tells the story of the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Shailene Woodley and Zachary Quinto also star in this film.
