Otter’s Top Films of 1994

Today I decided to do another 20th anniversary list. This one is a list of the 16 best films that were released in the year 1994. They are listed here in alphabetical order.

1. Airheads
This comedy was directed by Michael Lehmann. It had quite a sorted cast including Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, Adam Sandler, Michael McKean, Joe Mantegna, Chris Farley, Ernie Hudson, Judd Nelson, and David Arquette.

2. Blue Chips
This basketball sports drama starring Nick Nolte was directed by William Friedkin. Included in its cast were real basketball players such as Shaquille O’Nel, Penny Hardaway and Larry Bird. Also in the film were JT Walsh and Ed O’Neill and also included a ton of cameos by the likes of Dick Vitale and Bobby Knight.

3. Clear and Present Danger
This action film was based on a Tom Clancy novel and directed by Phillip Noyce. It starred Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan as well as William Dafoe and James Earl Jones.

4. Forrest Gump
This Robert Zemeckis comedy/drama was based on a novel by Winston Groom. The title role is played by Tom Hanks. Others starring in the film were Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field. This film won an Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director, among others.

5. Interview with the Vampire
Another film based on a book, this one was directed by Neil Jordan and based on the 1976 novel of the same name written by Anne Rice. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Christian Slater, Kirsten Dunst, and Antonio Banderas all starred in it.

6. Lightning Jack
This western comedy was written by and starred Paul Hogan. It was directed by Simon Wincer. Also starring in it were Cuba Gooding Jr and Beverly D’Angelo.

7. Maverick
Another western comedy, this one was directed by Richard Donner and was based on a 1950s television series. The title role was played by Mel Gibson. James Garner (who played Maverick on the TV show) starred in this film as Marshal Zane Cooper. Also in the film were Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina and James Coburn.

8. Naked Gun 33 1/3
This comedy was directed by Peter Segal. It was the third film in the series which was based on Police Squad, a television series that ran in the early 1980s. It starred Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley, George Kennedy, OJ Simpson and Fred Ward.

9. Natural Born Killers
Oliver Stone directed this action film about mass murderers that are glorified by the press. The screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino and it starred Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Sizemore and Tommy Lee Jones.

10. PCU
This often ignored college comedy was directed by Hart Bochner. It starred Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreau, and David Spade.

11. Pulp Fiction
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, this action film was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture but lost to Forrest Gump. It did, however, pick up the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The cast included quite a list of characters including John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Ving Rhames, Eric Stoltz, Rosanna Arquette and Christopher Walken.

12. Reality Bites
This romantic comedy was directed by Ben Stiller. It starred Winona Ryder, Ben Stiller, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn, Renee Zellwegger, Andy Dick and Joe Don Baker.

13. The Crow
This Alex Proyas supernatural action film based on a James O’Barr comic book is most well known for having been Brandon Lee’s last film due to the fact that he was killed accidentally during the filming. In addition to Lee, it starred Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, and David Patrick Kelly.

14. Leon: The Professional
This action film was directed by French director Luc Besson. It starred Jean Reno in the title role as well as Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman, and Danny Aiello.

15. True Lies
James Cameron directed this action comedy film based on a 1991 French film called La Totale. It starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere, and a very young Eliza Dushku.

16. Wyatt Earp
This western biopic was directed by Lawrence Kasdan. The cast included Kevin Costner (in the title role), Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, Jeff Fahey, Mark Harmon, Michael Madsen, Bill Pullman, Tom Sizemore, Adam Baldwin, and Tea Leoni.
