NHL Hockey Season Begins!

Today marks the beginning of the 2013-2014 NHL hockey season!

Tonight games:

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens
Capitals vs Blackhawks
Jets vs Oilers

For the 2nd straight year, however, there will be no All-Star Game.

There are a couple of changes in the NHL starting this season as well.

  1. New divisional alignment. There will be 2 divisions instead of 3 and there will be 16 teams in the East and 14 in the West. This will cause Detroit and Columbus to move to the East and Winnipeg to move West.
  2. New playoff format. Top 3 teams in each division automatically go to the playoffs. Last 2 playoff spots in each conference will be wild-card spots which go to the next 2 teams with the highest total points.

And for those that are interested, this season’s Winter Classic will be hosted by the Detroit Red Wings and played against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The last time the Red Wings were in the Winter Classic was back in 2009 and was played against the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field.
