Nonsense Sells; Especially in Politics.
by Blair Pettrey
I’m notorious for singing wrong lyrics to a song; and Blue’s Traveler’s “Hook” is no exception. Though, in this case, (and surely in many cases) I merely got ‘hooked’ and didn’t pay attention to what the words were actually saying, until recently when I was looking up the tab for it – and realized that it was mocking the entire industry of music, ESPECIALLY the listeners.
I fell captive, to what so many of my fellow comrade’s do every election… I fell for the ‘catchy hook’; I ignorantly ignored the actual meaning and message behind the song. Joke’s on me, right?
And yet, isn’t this what so many of us are doing during elections? There’s no denying that President Obama was a great speech giver. He was (and is) able to manipulate, create empathetic emotion in the listeners, and speak a whole lot of nothing – but make it sound REALLY good.
So going off emotion, rather than policy & action – my comrade’s lined up,in zombie like fashion, to vote for the “Nonsense” – and alas, jokes on Americans, because after all, what President Obama promised was nothing – he merely spoke words. They fell for the catchy tunes that contained no real meaning or substance.
Each of us are fully aware of the unfortunate reality of which is the current state of our country under the leadership of President Obama. I’ve had many of friends admit to me since such, that they wish they would have done more research or paid more attention to what was going on, before they re-voted for Obama in 2012. Irony, of course, the hook that caught us, was nothing but now regretful acceptance of tyranny.
Frank Turner in his song “Sons of Liberty” says it well:
So if ever a man should ask you for your business or your name
Tell him to go and f— himself, tell his friends to do the same
‘Cause a man who’d trade his liberty for a safe and dreamless sleep
Doesn’t deserve the both of them and neither shall he keep.
