What The Heck is a State Auditor?

Some folks have told me that there are certain elected offices that they don’t even bother voting for because they have no idea what that particular elected official does.

With that in mind, I thought I’d come up with some quick reads on what some of the (for lack of a better term) lesser-known elected offices are and what they do.

The Oklahoma State Auditor is the elected official that is responsible for overseeing and reviewing the financial accounts of all government agencies within Oklahoma.

To run for State Auditor in Oklahoma, a candidate must be 31 years old and must have at least 3 years experience as an accountant. They also must have been a resident of Oklahoma for at least 10 years prior to running for office.

They audit the accounts of all offices of the State twice a year.

If there is suspected wrongdoing, the Auditor will investigate and audit any person in question and, if necessary, advise the Attorney General to take legal action.

In this year’s election, here are the candidates for Oklahoma State Auditor:

Steve Burrage (D) – he is the incumbent
David Hanigar (R)
Gary Jones (R)
