Coming Soon 2009

with 2 comments

So…………..any promising movies coming out this year? Let’s see what I was able to dig up:

APRIL

Mutant Chronicles
This shows a bit of promise. It starts Thomas Jane (from the 2004 Punisher movies) and Ron Perlman (from Hell Boy) and is set in the future on Earth. Probably not something I would see in the theater but I might rent it.

For the most part, April seems like a dismal month for movie releases. But it’s April.

MAY

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Not something I would normally watch but it has Matthew McConughey in it and most of what I have seen that he has starred in I have enjoyed so this might be worth a viewing. Again, probably just on DVD though.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Here is one worth going to the theater for. I have seen trailers for it and the comic book geek in me really wants to see this movie!

Star Trek
I have to admit that I am not a big Star Trek fan. In fact, I almost despise it to a point. However, I do like the idea of a prequel to this series.

Angels and Demons
Looks like an interesting premise. I am a big fan of the National Treasure movies and this one seems somewhat similar to those. I will probably watch it but I should probably watch The DaVinci Code first (have never bothered to watch that one).

Terminator Salvation
Yeah, gotta see this one. Loved the first one. Really loved Judgment Day. The third was okay. I really am interested to see what Christian Bale does with the John Connor character.

Up
Having 3 kids I am sure at some point I will end up watching this movie. Funny thing is, I actually enjoy some of these movies that I usually end up watching just because the kids want to.

So by the looks of things, May looks like a really good month for movie releases.

JUNE

Year One
Harold Ramis movie starring Jack Black. This could be really good.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Definitely worth a view.

JULY

Public Enemies
Movie based on the life of John Dillinger. I’m a history nerd. Go figure that I want to see this one.

AUGUST

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra
I might actually want to see this movie even more than the Wolverine movie. GI Joe? Really?!? I used to play with those toys and read the comic book back when I was a kid. This is a must must see!!

Bandslam
2 high school kids form a rock band and enter a battle of the bands competition. Does not sound like there is much to it but I think I would probably watch it anyway.

The rest of the year looks absolutely dismal.

Currently Reading: Watchmen

TITLE:  Watchmen

AUTHOR:  Alan Moore
ARTIST:  Dave Gibbons
PUBLISHER:  DC Comics
YEAR PUBLISHED:  1986
It has taken me forever but I have finally gotten around to starting what is considered by many to be one of the best graphic novels of all time.
In fact, on the cover of the copy I have, it says it is one of TIME magazine’s 100 Best Novels.
We shall soon see if it lives up to the hype.

Poll of the Week: Best Hulk

without comments

Going back to movies on this one.

Who do you think was the best actor(s) to portray the comic book character The Hulk?
Was it Bill Bixby / Lou Ferrigno from the Incredible Hulk TV series?
Was it Eric Bana from the 2003 Ang Lee movie?
Was it Edward Norton in the 2009 Incredible Hulk movie?
Happy voting!

Another Top Superhero Films List

without comments

I have tackled this subject a few times myself. Here is Moviefone’s take on it.

  • Superman II
  • Incredibles
  • Batman (1989)
  • Superman
  • X-Men
  • Spider-Man
  • X2
  • Iron Man
  • Batman Begins
  • Spider-Man II

Here is my list on the same subject (although I only have the Top 9 – darn Top 10ers! LoL!)

Interestingly enough, Moviefone and I share many of the same movies in our Top 10 list. X2 was okay, but not good enough for my list and Spider-Man 2 being at the top of their list I will never understand. The folks at Moviefone of course list theirs in order of preference which I rarely do. I do not like to show favoritism in my comic book movies (with the exception of Batman Begins that is). But how Spider-Man 2 is a better movie than its prequel is bad enough but saying that it is a better movie than Batman Begins?!? They have got to be kidding!

Speaking of which, if I were to update my list, I would probably end up taking one off my list and replacing with with The Dark Knight. I am not sure which of my current list I would replace though. Perhaps Superman Returns.

Interesting post script here (well sort of a post script). Moviefone also listed the Top 10 Worst Superhero Movies:

  • Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Yeah, that was a pretty horrible movie.
  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I was not really aware that this was a super-hero movie per se but it wasn’t all that great a movie. Probably not deserving of the title worst.
  • The Punisher (2004) Absolutely disagree with them! The Dolph Lundgren version was way worse and did not make this list. In fact in this article, the writer actually says that the Dolph Lundgren version is “Superman compared to the 2004 version.” Whoever wrote this one was obviously drunk!
  • Daredevil Yeah, this was pretty awful too.
  • Supergirl Once again, I will have to agree
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Yup
  • Ghost Rider Uh-huh
  • Elektra Never seen it but if it is a spin-off of Daredevil, probably isn’t Oscar potential.
  • Batman & Robin Pretty crummy movie. Shameful for the franchise.
  • Catwoman Never seen this one either but heard terrible things about it.

New Favorites

without comments

Even though I did do this list in July I felt like it was a good time to revise it. I also upped the list from 7 to 9 this time. These are in no particular order.

  2. Animal Farm (George Orwell)
  3. The Barbarian Way (Erwin McManus)

  7. Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2 (Steve Stockman)
  8. Batman: Year One (Frank Miller)
  9. Screwtape Letters (C.S. Lewis)

  1. Batman Begins
  2. Dogma
  3. Mother Night
  4. 12 Monkeys

Results of the Super Hero Movie Poll

without comments

I received a total of 6 responses on this one.

2 voted for Batman Begins. 2 voted for Spider-Man.
1 for The Dark Knight and 1 for Other.

So we have a 2-way tie between Batman Begins and Spider-Man.

Here is my ranking of these movies for those that are interested:

  1. Batman Begins
  2. The Incredible Hulk
  3. Iron Man
  4. The Dark Knight (although I would have to say that this along with Iron Man are a very close tie for 3rd).
  5. Spider-Man
  6. Sin City
  7. Howard the Duck
  8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  9. Hell Boy
