On This Day (Nov 18)
On this day in history in…
1493 – Christopher Columbus first sights Puerto Rico.
1883 – American and Canadian railroads institute the 5 time zones in North America.
1978 – Jim Jones leads his Peoples Temple cult in a mass murder-suicide. 918 people in all die, including 270 children.
1986 – Calvin and Hobbes appears for the first time. Woohoo! Way to go Bill Watterson!
2004 – Russia officially ratifies the Kyoto Protocol. The United States, by the way, has still not ratified it. In 1997, the Senate voted unanimously against ratification. President Bush has stated that he does not support it. However, many states (including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Deleware, Massachusetts, and Maryland) are involved in a state-level version of the Kyoto Protocol. Also, California Governor Schwarzenegger signed a law that is also a state-level version of the Protocol. Hmm..something to think about.
And by the way, Happy Birthday Jamie Moyer! Even though you left our Mariners you are still in good standing to me. Congrats on the World Series win!
